Classroom practice and state assessment

The official 2026+ Wyoming mathematics summative blueprint lists mathematics in Grades 3–10 and became operational in 2025–26. Grade 3 is included in that listed range. Follow current school directions and accommodations. Independently published practice has its own tools, timing, questions, and scoring; its result does not establish a state performance level. This original worked activity is not an official assessment item. Read official assessment guidance.

Explain a Two-Step Calculation

Solve an original Grade 3 packing problem, check two different calculations, and connect a worked explanation with selected Wyoming mathematics references.

Explain a Two-Step Calculation

In an invented classroom task, a helper packs 6 counters into each of 4 bags, then adds 5 loose counters to the tray. How many counters are on the tray altogether? One student writes 4 × 6 + 5. Another writes 4 × (6 + 5). Explain which calculation represents the task, then check whether the result is reasonable.

Invented packing record
Part of the taskQuantity
Filled bags4 bags, 6 counters each
Loose counters5 counters total

Follow the reasoning

The four bags contain 4 × 6 = 24 counters. The five loose counters are added once, so the total is 24 + 5 = 29. The equation c = 4 × 6 + 5 represents the unknown total c. Multiplication is completed before addition in this expression. The other expression places five extra counters inside each bag: 4 × 11 = 44, which does not match five loose counters added once. A quick reasonableness check starts with twenty-four bagged counters and adds a small amount. Twenty-nine is consistent with that count; forty-four would add twenty counters rather than five.

Check the explanation

Both expressions are valid calculations, but only one describes the stated quantities. Parentheses change the grouping; they are not decoration added whenever there are two operations. Keep the units visible: six counters per bag, four bags, and five counters in total outside the bags. This is an original classroom problem, not a state assessment question.

Try the next step

Change the directions so the helper puts 5 additional counters into each of the four bags and adds no loose counters. Now explain why 4 × (6 + 5) fits and gives 44. Then try three bags of eight counters with two loose counters, and explain why 26 is reasonable.

Wyoming reference for this worked activity

The Wyoming mathematics standards page links the 2023 mathematics standards, with the current PDF marked as emended in February 2025. It identifies July 17, 2024 as the effective date and 2025–26 as the year for full implementation in districts. These dates describe different stages. Use the complete content and performance standards together with the school’s current learning sequence; a worked example selects only one focus. Read the complete grade requirements and ask the teacher which topics come next.

Choose a next task from the student’s explanation

Use a different set of numbers to check whether the student can explain the same relationship. If the explanation is unclear, return to the model; if the reasoning is sound but a calculation is wrong, work through a shorter calculation and check it against the model. Use the related learning resources alongside the teacher’s assigned goals.

Grade 3 math: useful planning questions

Why can two correct calculations give different answers to this problem?

A calculation can be mathematically correct while representing different quantities. Four times eleven describes adding five counters to every bag. Four times six plus five describes adding five counters once. Explain the quantities and grouping before deciding which expression fits.
