This independent collection supports skill practice alongside class lessons. It includes prerequisite review and extension topics as well as Grade 8 work. Treat the directory as a choice of practice topics, rather than an official IAR test or a complete standards checklist.

Choose a starting point

Find the part of a problem that is causing difficulty: the calculation, the representation, or the explanation. Review that skill first, then return to a problem that combines it with something the student already understands.

  • Real numbers: because 8² = 64 and 9² = 81, the square root of 65 lies between 8 and 9. A useful estimate starts with nearby perfect squares.
  • Linear relationships: in y = 2x + 3, inputs 1 and 3 give outputs 5 and 9. The rate of change is (9 − 5) ÷ (3 − 1) = 2. Connect the table, equation and graph before moving to more complicated examples.
  • Right triangles: legs of 6 and 8 units give a hypotenuse of 10 units because 6² + 8² = 100 = 10². Identify the right angle and hypotenuse before substituting lengths.
How should a student check a completed problem?

Substitute an equation’s solution into the original equation, compare a graph with its table, or check the units and size of a geometric result. Explain why the method applies. Use the class lesson or teacher’s worked solution to review a step that is still unclear.

Separate topic practice from official IAR preparation

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness assesses Illinois Learning Standards in mathematics and English language arts for Grades 3–8. The Illinois State Board of Education’s IAR resource page provides grade-specific mathematics blueprints, official practice resources and guidance on assessment tools.

For Grade 8 review, connect number-system work, equations, functions, geometry and data interpretation to the teacher’s current expectations. The directory also includes broader material, such as financial-literacy and extension topics; their presence does not establish that they are Grade 8 IAR requirements. Use the official blueprint to decide what belongs in an exam-review plan.

Paper skill practice and familiarity with the test interface serve different purposes. ISBE links the Student Readiness Tool for learning TestNav navigation, features and item types. Use those official resources for platform practice rather than treating these single-topic worksheets as a full test simulation.
