Classroom practice and state assessment information
The current state NM-MSSA resource page describes statewide mathematics and ELA assessment at the end of Grades 3–8, including Grade 5. Scores are one measure and should be considered alongside classroom and other assessment evidence. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway and school directions. The assessment directory is updating resources for 2026–2027; this guide does not claim Spring2027 administration specifications from a Spring2026 manual. Independently published practice may use its own timer, tools, question count, and scoring; these are not official administration specifications or a prediction of a state performance level. Read the official NM-MSSA resource page for official guidance.

Use place value to check a decimal purchase calculation
Decimal calculations become easier to explain when each digit retains its place value. This original classroom purchase uses invented prices in dollars and no additional charges. It combines multiplication, addition, and subtraction with hundredths.
Try this original activity
Three folders cost $1.25 each, and one label pack costs $2.40. A child has $8.00. What is the total cost and how much remains? Explain the place-value reasoning and check the result with an estimate.
| Item | Quantity | Price each |
|---|---|---|
| Folder | 3 | $1.25 |
| Label pack | 1 | $2.40 |
Work through the reasoning
Three folders cost 3 × 1.25 = 3.75 dollars: three ones make three, three groups of two tenths make six tenths, and three five-hundredths make fifteen hundredths. More directly, 3 × 125 cents = 375 cents. Add the pack: 3.75 + 2.40 = 6.15, aligning hundredths with hundredths. Subtract from the available amount: 8.00 − 6.15 = 1.85. The subtraction can be checked by adding 6.15 + 1.85 = 8.00. A rough estimate of three folders at about $1 each plus a pack around $2 gives about $5; a closer estimate using folders at $1.30 gives $3.90 + $2.40 = $6.30, near the exact $6.15. The estimate is a check of magnitude, not a replacement for the exact calculation.
Check the common mistake
Adding 1.25 only once ignores the three folders. Aligning by the rightmost printed digit rather than the decimal point can also mix tenths and hundredths. Writing 2.4 as 2.40 preserves its value and makes the place values visible. The $1.85 is the amount remaining, while $6.15 is the cost. These prices are invented and omit taxes or other charges.
Try a related case
Buy two folders instead of three. Their cost is $2.50, the new total is $4.90, and $3.10 remains from $8.00. Explain why removing one folder reduces the cost by $1.25 and increases the remaining amount by the same quantity.

New Mexico Grade 5 math: useful study questions
Why can I write 2.4 as 2.40?
Four tenths equal forty hundredths, so both decimals represent the same value. The extra zero can help line up the place values in a calculation.
