Classroom practice and state assessment information
The Nevada Department of Education identifies Smarter Balanced mathematics assessment for Grades 3–8, including Grade 5. Its public overview describes a computer-adaptive assessment. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway and current school administration directions, including any alternate assessment pathway. Independently published practice may use its own timer, tools, question count, and scoring; these are not official administration specifications or a prediction of a state performance level. Read the current Nevada assessment overview for official guidance.
Use the worked activity and lesson directory to choose a skill. Confirm the directions of an independent practice resource before assigning it.
Use the order in an ordered pair
A coordinate pair gives two directions in a fixed order. On this invented fair map, x counts units to the right from the origin and y counts units up. Reversing the numbers can name a different booth even when both numbers stay the same.
Try this original activity
Booth A is at (3, 5). Describe how to locate it from (0, 0). Booth B is five units right and three units up from the origin. Write B’s coordinates and explain whether A and B occupy the same point.
Work through the reasoning
For A, start at the origin, move three units right in the x direction and five units up in the y direction. The point is (3, 5). For B, the horizontal value is five and the vertical value is three, so its ordered pair is (5, 3). They are different points: A lies higher, while B lies farther right. The axes and labels establish which value describes which direction. The path used to describe a location is a way to find the endpoint; it is not a claim that fair visitors must follow that particular walking route. Both points are in the first quadrant and use the same scale.
Check the common mistake
Do not treat an ordered pair as an unordered collection of two numbers. Also do not count the origin as the first unit: one unit means the first space from zero. The map does not supply real distances in feet or meters; its unit is defined only as a grid unit. It also does not show barriers or permitted paths, so a walking-distance claim would need more information than the booth coordinates.
Try a related case
Place C at (2, 4) and D at (4, 2) on a new first-quadrant grid. Explain the difference in horizontal and vertical locations. Then locate (4, 4): reversing those equal coordinates leaves the same pair, which is a special case rather than a general rule.
