How to Prepare for the PERT Math Test?
The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, is known as the PERT, is a test to determine the appropriate level of college course work for an incoming student. In essence, it is a broad and quick assessment of students’ academic abilities.
The PERT test consists of three multiple-choice separate exams:
- Mathematics
- Reading
- Writing
The PERT test is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). It means that if the correct answer is chosen, the next question will be harder.
If the answer given is incorrect, the next question will be easier. This also means that once an answer is selected on the CAT it cannot be changed.
The mathematics portion of the PERT test contains 30 multiple-choice questions.
The test covers data analysis, geometry, and algebra on both intermediate and basic levels.
The topics on the math test include:
- linear equations, linear inequalities, literal equations, and quadratic formulas
- simultaneous linear equations with two variables
- evaluating algebraic expressions
- translating between lines and inspecting equations on coordinate planes
- dividing by binomials and monomials
- adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, simplifying, and factoring polynomials
Students are not allowed to use the calculator when taking a PERT assessment. A pop-up calculator is embedded in the test for some questions.
Scores on the PERT test range from 50 to 150.
On the PERT mathematics exam, you will be placed in lower-level developmental education if you score between 50-95.
If your score is between 96 and 113, then you will be placed in higher-level developmental education.
A score of 114 to 122 will enable you to be placed in Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033).
A score of 123 or higher will allow you to take College Algebra or higher (MAC 1105).
