How Is the OAR Test Scored?
The OAR test or Officer Aptitude Rating is a subset of the larger Aviation Standard Test Battery utilized by the Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. The OAR is free to anyone who meets the minimum application criteria for an officer training program. To apply for the Officer Candidate School, you must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 19 and 35 and have a bachelor’s degree.
The OAR test consists of reading comprehension, core tests in math, and mechanical comprehension. All questions are multiple-choice and are used to assess whether you have the fundamental cognitive skills and knowledge to succeed in an officer training program.

Your scores on this test will be used to decide whether you are qualified for officer training or no. It is also used to help you decide which occupation(s) you will be most suited for.
The OAR is given a cumulative score of 20 to 80. The average score is from 40 to 60. The minimum score you must for to qualify for officer training depends on which branch of the military you are in. For example, for the Navy, you will need a minimum score of 35. It is highly recommended that you set your goal above this minimum. Many officer training programs are competitive and have a limited number of locations available. Even if you have a minimum cut, your acceptance is not guaranteed. The higher your score, the stronger your program.
